As we approach the end of March and Easter is knocking at our door, down here in Southwest Florida, we are getting excited that the summer weather is just around the corner. As the beautiful weather we are currently enjoying begins to heat up, so to will the questions from customers regarding swimming pools in our area.

Many times, people that purchase in our area are not planning on being here full time. They may want to use their home as a place they visit for a couple weeks each year or maybe even a couple months. With the thought of them not being here full time, many times we are asked how common pools are in or area and what are the costs associated with them if we aren’t here to maintain them ourselves?

I thought it would be interesting to share some data regarding pools in our area and show how commonplace they really are. Take Marco Island as a sample. Currently in the Marco Area Multiple Listing Service (MLS), there are currently 420 single family homes for sale on the island. Of those 420 active homes for sale, 383 of those homes currently have pools. That is over 91% of all homes currently for sale in the area that have swimming pools.

What about from a rental standpoint? Does a pool make a difference? The short answer is yes, it makes a difference. From a rental standpoint, people that are looking for a single family home ask whether a home has a pool nearly as often as they ask whether a home has wi-fi.

What about finding a pool service? Well, there are many good pool companies in our area and finding one is fairly simple. We at Harborview can happily recommend one at any point should you be looking for a pool service. What about cost? Monthly costs to maintain a pool are minimal and a pool service will most likely handle a normal sized pool for $85-$115 per month.
